The Double Dig

I have now done the double dig and put the plants in the ground. This video was done last weekend and shows the cover crop turned into the soil. I only amended with some fish bone meal for the phosphorous that I know my soil needs.

A moderate rain had washed the fava mush and the bone meal into the soil. I then did a double dig to the bed. I have moved the earth more to the sunny side of the garden and raked the large clods to the shady side. I will work on breaking them up as I weed and maintain the bed.

Since this video was done I have planted the tomatoes and the pepperoncini.

Garden Update Febuary 2010

This video was done before the previous one. YouTube had trouble uploading it. This is before the harvest of the Favas and also has the strawberries one week prior.

Harvesting the Cover Crop

Since the favas were planted almost 1 month too late the beans have not formed. I do not want to wait. The cover crop needs to be turned in now so that I can plant the summer crop next week. I am hoping it wont rain too much this weekend and I can start the double dig.

Today I cut down the favas and shredded them in preparation for turning them into the soil when I do the double dig.

Strawberries

The strawberry container is working very well. I have many strawberries already. Steven and I have eaten a few of the first ones. They are pretty good. Very sweet and good strawberry flavor.
